Absolute value of any number is a positive number.
|7|=7
|-7|=7

The absolute value stripes make everything inside those stripes positive. When there is a negative number between the stripes, they will make it positive. Mathematically you can see it as the distance from a certain number to 0 (the distance from -7 to 0 is 7).
