x = all real numbers, except for x = 1.

A number divided by itself will always yield a result of 1. (x-1) is being divided by (x-1), which means that both the numerator and denominator are identical. This will always produce a result of 1, with one exception:

x cannot equal 1, as division by zero is impossible. (1-1) = 0.
