In the 15th Century, the Ming Dynasty closed off trade with foreign countries. At a time when European countries were exploring, colonizing and trading all over the world, the Chinese closed off themselves.
This was also true for Japan, which followed an isolationist policy for centuries until Europeans forced them to open up their markets for trade.
