Being in a drunken condition means that Haymitch is unable to think clearly and give good advice to Katniss and Peeta on how to stay alive in the Hunger Games. In addition, Katniss and Peeta are relying on Haymitch to help them survive; as a drunkard, he is basically no use. In fact, he could even try something that could end up hurting Katniss and Peeta. Therefore, Haymitch being drunk would be frightening for Katniss and Peeta’s case.
