The statement is false. It is incorrect that the number pi is an irrational number because of the phrase in the sentence 'repeating pattern'. Irrational numbers like Pi cannot be expressed as fraction or ratio of integers. Plus, they do not end (or like you said, they go on forever) HOWEVER they do not follow or have a repeating pattern.
