When competition is added to physical activity it enhances performance levels of that physical activity and sometimes makes it enjoyable and exciting, especially when skill perfection is the main goal of the physical activity.

However, it may start to become harmful when people who engage in it see beating opponents as the key goal rather than perfecting the skill. In this case the stress of competing then overtakes the enjoyment derived from it.
