I think the answer is he fell in love with another woman whose name is  Anne Boleyn in 1527. He wanted an annulment because he already has a relationship with Anne. He believed that for being the King of England he has the right to have a divorce, however this was subject to Catholic Church decision. In the end, Cardinal Wolsey wanted to gain the King's support and the Christian monarch so he made a decision that the marriage of King Henry VIII and Catherine was invalid.
