Answer: Scientific theories can be backed up with evidence/data (the evidence that backs the theory isn't common knowledge to everyone yet), while a hypothesis is just an educated guess, meaning that you are making a prediction based on something already known.

They are both similar in the sense that they are questions that are answered by facts, but theories are answered with factual evidence rather than factual reasoning (hypothesis).
