Gregor Mendel a scientists born on July 20, 1822, in Hynčice, Czech Republic. He was largely ignored during his lifetime, but around half a century later after he died, his work was found to be ahead of his time. He is credited with discovering basic heredity, such as alleles:

He died January 6, 1884, in Brno, Czech Republic.
