The democrats tried to solve the problem of racial strife by legislating segregation.

How was segregation legislated in the south?

The progressive democrats did this in the south through a series of laws that were called the Jim Crow laws.

These laws were to further maintain the segregation that existed in the country and keep the Blacks from being accepted as full members of the society.
