A garden table and a bench cost $985 combined. The garden table costs $35 more than the bench. What is the cost of the bench?

985-35=950, 950÷2=475, 475+35=510, 510 and 475

let the cost price of bench be x
then cost price of garden table is x+35

total cost = x + x+35
985 = 2x +35
985 -35÷2 =x
425 =×
then the total cost of bench is 425 and garden is 460
