In 1519, the Spanish Governor of Jamaica sent a fleet of ships under the leadership of Alonzo Álvarez de Piñeda to map out the Gulf of Mexico and establish a Spanish colony in the adjacent area. As such, going by the instructions of the governor of Jamaica, Alonzo Álvarez de Piñeda and his fellow explorers primary goal is to map out the area and establish a colony in the area of Texas for the Spanish crown.
