I believe protein is derived from the Greek word proteios

The word was made by a French Chemist in 1838 and comes from a Greek word 'Proteios' meaning the 'first quality' a substance thought to be essential to life by the Greeks. The modern use is from German 'Protein'. This word passed to the rest of the world from Germany via England in 1907.
