Vegetation helps pack and keep the soil in place because of their roots. Vegetation can also help block wind. The desert does not have this kind of protection.

The roots of vegetation help to anchor in the sand and low brush of vegetation covers the sand so it protects it. When it is an open desert, it just blows away with nothing to slow the rate of erosion.
