Mating season is the answer. During mating season deer go look for mates in different areas and roam all over the place. To compete over a doe, two males with get into a fight with their antlers trying to put the other buck into a disadvantage. The fight takes time and usually lasts for 5 minutes or longer depending on the buck and the doe.
