In Act I, scene 1, we learn that Benvolio did not approach Romeo. He is telling Montague about Romeo, and he informs the father of having seen the son. Benvolio tells us that he did not approach Romeo because he noticed that Romeo purposely hid from him, and he wanted to respect his wishes, as Benvolio has also experienced the need to be on his own before.
